Education

Camerata San Antonio’s activities as music educators cover the spectrum from introducing young children to the classical music to training the most advanced local string students in the art of string quartet playing.

In-school Concerts

Since 2003, Camerata has performed free educational concerts at schools in the Alamo Heights, Boerne, East Central, Edgewood, Harlandale, Judson, North East, Northside, San Antonio and Southside Independent School Districts, and St. Mary’s Hall for students Pre-K through high school, reaching over 15,000 students. At the Edgewood Academy of Communications and Fine Arts in 2004, our concert so inspired the student body that they successfully lobbied their teachers, administrators, and finally their school board to create a strings program! Our educational concerts are designed to highlight the instruments of the string quartet and their distinctly individual qualities. Every program features performances, demonstrations, speaking, and a question & answer session. We relish the opportunity to interact with local students in this way, not only sharing classical music with them, but also our love of music and of working together to make music.

The generosity of donors and business sponsors make it possible for us to present our in-school concerts free of charge to students in districts where funding is not otherwise available. Adopt-A-School is a special underwriting opportunity through which businesses may underwrite a series of three educational concerts to be performed in an underserved San Antonio area schools.

Annual String Quartet Master Class

Every spring, Camerata San Antonio offers a free master class for area high school students. Existing student groups, usually preparing to compete at the state UIL solo and ensemble competition, are invited to perform and receive feedback from the Camerata San Antonio String Quartet. One group from each class is invited to open our final concert of the season each year, offering these students a valuable performance experience.

Cadenza Academy String Quartet Seminar

Each summer, the quartet is honored to be artist-faculty at the Cadenza Academy’s annual summer string Quartet seminar. Students are admitted and placed in quartets by audition, are assigned quartet music in advance to prepare and finally come together for five days to prepare quartets by Haydn and Mozart for public performance. They receive two coachings a day with members of the Camerata San Antonio String Quartet, learning not only about how to use their instruments to make music together, but also how to navigate working on a team to fulfill a mutual goal. More information about Cadenza Academy and the seminar is available at casamusic.org.
